Introduction

Elogen comprising the active ingredients such as desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol is a prescription oral birth control that works to keep pregnancy from taking place by preventing ovulation. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, it is an oral contraceptive pill that is a generic form of the more popular medication Desogen. Each Elogen box contains 21 tablets that need to be taken by mouth continuously for 3 weeks. Each tablet has 0.15 mg desogestrel and 0.02 mg ethinyl estradiol apart from comprising many inactive ingredients.

Drug Indications

Elogen is mainly indicated to prevent pregnancy as a birth control pill. It can also be recommended to address other complications in females, for example hormone imbalance, unpredictable menstrual periods and amenorrhea (nonexistence or inhibition of usual menstrual flow).

Mechanism of Action

The hormones incorporated in Elogen (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol) tablets act by stamping down ovulation (the release of an ovum or egg cell from the ovary) and modifying the cervical mucus and covering of the uterus. Altering the dimension of the cervical mucus makes it more difficult for sperm to get into the uterus. Varying the covering of the uterus makes it more difficult for embryos to be attached to and embedded in the uterus.
